Continental to implement a free Sumitomo Rubber Industries, LTD (“SRI”) voluntary tyre exchange campaign in Malaysia
Tyre manufacturer Sumitomo Rubber Industries, LTD. (SRI) has announced a free voluntary tyre exchange campaign to proactively inspect car tyres in its Dunlop SP Touring T1 line.
No traffic accidents have been reported, but under specific conditions the affected tyres might show tread or belt separation.
Potentially affected tyres were produced by SRI’s subsidiary factories in Thailand and Indonesia and were sold in the replacement business for some ASEAN countries.
Potentially affected tyres can be identified as follows:
Product Line | Affected Articles | Plant | Plant code on sidewall | DOT Start | DOT End |
Dunlop SP Touring T1 | 215/70R15 98H DLP SP T1 | Thailand | R8 | 0813 | 4714 |

The last four digits of the DOT serial numbers indicate the production period (week/year). No other tyre sizes, production periods or product lines are affected.
Aiming to offer maximum safety for their customers, SRI has adapted the production specification in order to further increase the robustness of the tyre. All sizes of the respective Dunlop SP Touring T1 are now available with an enforced specification.
Tyres within the scope of the voluntary tyre exchange campaign will be replaced free of charge by SRI and its Distribution Network.
In addition to the Continental tyre brand portfolio, Continental distributes certain Dunlop branded tyres in ASEAN countries (e.g. Malaysia and Singapore). Therefore, Continental is implementing a free voluntary tyre exchange campaign with SRI in these markets.
Vehicle owners whose cars are equipped with the potentially affected tyres should contact a Continental/Dunlop/Viking service outlet in Malaysia, or visit https://www.dunloptyres.com.my/news-events/Exchange.htm for more information.

How do I check whether the tyres on my vehicle are affected?
The affected tyres involved in this voluntary tyre exchange campaign can be identified by the brand name Dunlop, the tyre designation Dunlop SP Touring T1 in selected articles and by the DOT serial number found on the sidewall of each tyre.
Example: DOT R806 …. 4414
If the DOT serial number is not present on the one side, it will be located on the opposite side of the tyre.
The plant code on each article can be identified in the table above.
What do I have to do if I have affected tyre(s)?
If you are of the opinion, that you have (a) tyre(s) that is/are included in this program, please make an appointment with your nearest Continental retail partner at your earliest convenience for tyre exchange or visit Continental dealer locator website (http://www.continental-tyres.com.my/www/tyres_my_en/general/dealer_locator_local_msia_en.html)
If you have disposed of one or more of the affected tyres already or sold the vehicle on to which the tyres were mounted, please inform us with the appropriate information (e.g. to whom the vehicle was sold) by email (warranty@conti.my) or telephone Continental Malaysia at

When will this tyre exchange campaign start and for how long will it run?
This voluntary tyre exchange campaign started on 15th March 2016. We have informed all dealers/importers to implement the program. The program will run for an indefinite period so that tyres can also be exchanged at a later date (see also next item about “Costs”). Nevertheless, we strongly recommend that you check the tyres of your car before you use it again. The potentially affected tyres are recommended to exchange as soon as possible.
What costs would I probably have to incur?
The exchange will be carried out at no cost for affected customers (including costs for mounting, balancing etc. if applicable), providing that the exchange is:
- replacement of affected tyres with recommended Dunlop substitute tyres of the same size as those originally fitted, which is listed at the table below.
- completed latest on 31st December 2016. After 31st December 2016, the compensation will be based on the current valid version of the Continental warranty regulation. Customer may choose to replace other articles by topping up the price difference based on the stock availability and price agreed at retailers/dealers.

Why are SRI having these tyres replaced?
Under specific conditions the affected tyres might show tread or belt separation. Potentially affected tyre sizes are limited with specific production dates. Potentially affected tyres were produced by SRI’s subsidiary factories in Thailand and Indonesia. The exchange program is being initiated proactively to avoid any potential risk to vehicle owners and other road-users. The potentially affected tyres were sold to customers in ASEAN countries and solely within the replacement business.
What measures will SRI be taking to address the condition?
Aiming to offer maximum safety for their customers, SRI has adapted the production specification in order to further increase the robustness of the tyre. All sizes of the respective Dunlop SP Touring T1 are now available with an enforced specification.
What about the safety of other Dunlop tyres?
The safety of our customers is always our top priority. The findings mentioned above are restricted to the specific article, size and production period.
Have there already been any accidents?
To date, Continental has not received any traffic reports of accidents or injuries in connection with this condition.
What do I do if I have further questions about the program?
You need to check the product line/name, size and DOT of the tyres.
