Inspect your tyres of baldness, injuries, bruises, punctures...

You have seen how important it is to check your tyre pressure. There are several other things about tyres that require regular inspection. Let’s look at the main problems or faults that may force you to replace your tyres.

Baldness
When your tyre thread has worn down to the level of its tread wear indicator (TWI), or when the cords or breaker are exposed, it’s time to replace your tyres.

Injuries
Tyre damage like cuts, cracks or chunking of the tread may be deep enough to expose the casing ply cords or the breaker. Such damage should be treated immediately. Otherwise, water stones, nails and sharp objects will reach the casing material and cause irreparable damage to the tyre.

Bruises
Bulges or bumps in the sidewall or tread area are symptoms of separation- ie the casing ply cords have broken or split. Tyres suffering from separation should be replaced.

Avoid sudden and severe shocks to small area of your tyres, such as driving them over kerbs or hitting pot-holes and other objects on the road. Even at low speeds, these shocks can weaken or fracture your tyres’ casing structures and may cause a tyre blow-out at a later stage.

A tyre’s bruises are not always apparent to the naked eye because of its resilient sidewall rubber. If ever you suspect such damage to any of your tyres, remove it from the rim and have it thoroughly inspected.

Punctures
Slow leaks in your tyres may result in excessive heat building-up and serious damage due to your tyres being run underinflated.

When inspecting your tyres, always remove all debris, nails, stones and other objects embedded in the tread and check for such leaks.

Broken rims.
While inspecting your tyres, make it a habit to check the rims as well. Make sure they are not bent, cracked or otherwise damaged.
